 [ "Darkly inclined" ]

1: Darkly inclined refers to someone who follows a darker or spookier lifestyle, but isn't necessarily goth. Interests can include Tim Burton, Gothic literature or anything that creates a darker atmosphere, Halloween, music of a generally darker style and dressing alternative/darker fashion styles. Members of other subcultures can be darkly inclined, like metalheads. Goth pertains to someone who listens to goth music, including genres such as goth rock, death rock, post-punk, gothabilly, cold wave and dark wave (e.g. ethereal wave and neoclassical). It does not describe "anyone dark", it has a specific definition.

  * e.g.,  ... Goths can be darkly inclined, but it's not a requirement by definition of the subculture. Some darkly inclined people can even discover goth music and become part of the subculture, too. It doesn't always have to work hand in hand, but it can. 

 [ "a scanner darkly" ]

1: A book written by Philip K. Dick, that was later turned into an animated movie of the same name. Follows the story of a undercover drug detective who ends up getting hooked on the drugs he's fighting. His sacrifice, however, uncovers the terrible truth about an agency that provides drug addicts safe-houses to get off the drug. Fantastic book and great movie. The book is better though. The story was inspired by the 1970s drug culture that Dick participated in. It's dedicated to dozens of his friends that died or were crippled by drug use.

  * e.g.,  ... A scanner darkly is a freaky story, makes drugs sound very unappealing.

1: a digitally animated movie starring Keanu Reeves. Set in near future USA where 20% of the population are addicted to the mind destroying substance D. Arctor (Reeves)is an addict and a undercover police officer attempting to find the suppliers of sub. D though due to the mind splitting effects of the drug he isn't fully aware that he is part of the group of people he is investigating.

  * e.g.,  ... man i would sure not want to watch that movie a scanner darkly high. 

 [ "darkly hinting" ]

1: Vaguely and indirectly referencing an opinion that would be offensive if spelled out, in order to avoid being banned. Toxic to conversations, because it leaves it to the person responding to reference the controversial topic. Common around racial politics in nominally neutral forums.

  * e.g.,  ... How about you stop darkly hinting and say what you mean?
