1: To casually drop the name of a famous person who you, a friend or relative know, so as to appear cool vicariously because you know a famous person.

1: Referring to someone who is popular or famous in order to let the other person know that you yourself are popular and actually have friends. The event being described is usually a lie, or the story was exaggerated. Most of the time name dropping is used by people who think they are cool, but are not.

1: The act of inserting the name of any obscure cultural institution into a conversation in an effort to accelerate the building of rapport with someone, or to make one's self appear to be more important. Typically considered by intelligent people to be a negative habit.

1: Name dropping is used to inflate one's stature in a conversation by linking oneself to a famous person or situation. This is sometimes done while talking about something completely different. The names are just "dropped" in there. Some attempts are more subtle than others but it is basically annoying.

  * e.g.,  ... I see those hats everywhere now. When I was at the inauguration for Obama they were all over the place. But when I met Rupaul at that charity party last month he said they are on their way out. And good riddance too!

1: mentioning someone (usually 'famous') in a conversation to imply that you are best friends with said person in lame hope of appearing cool by association

1: verb. While in conversation, to bring up a name that provokes memories or opinions from those involved in the conversation.

  * e.g.,  ... Person A: You hear that Gwynn and Ripkin got into the hall?

1: (verb)To give out, report, or list a name or names associated with the documentation of a negative action.

  * e.g.,  ... Name dropping due to violation of ToS is frowned upon on most internet forums 

 [ "Name Drop Violation" ]

1: When somebody you know who is a notorious "name-dropper " crosses the line and starts to reference unpopular people as famous or people that have too many degrees of separation from "said"celebrity, hence siblings, in-laws or distant relations as famous or interesting in any way.

  * e.g.,  ... Pablo was pumped to have the sister of the founder of a "major silicon valley social media company" attend his happy hour, Roberto and I both felt this was a major "Name Drop Violation". 

 [ "band name dropping" ]

1: Directly related to name dropping, the act of creating an overly large list of bands in an effort to appear more culturally secure rather than a true love of music. The "band name dropper" is trying to appear more cultured and music knowledgeable that they really are. Intelligent people are able to see through the facade and this is a negative habit.

  * e.g.,  ... "Oh Hey! I like Tool, The Stones, Metallica, Foo Fighters, blah blah blah, Styx, The Beatles, blah blah.. (usually by now you tune out again.)" 

 [ "name dropping sleaze" ]

1: Someone who name drops and is a sleazy one, like really bad at it

  * e.g.,  ... She is such a name dropping sleaze! Dragging my name through the dirt!
