[Noun] | "bea*con" | \ ˈbē-kən \
1: a lighthouse or other signal for guidance
2: a radio transmitter emitting signals to guide aircraft
3: a source of light or inspiration
Origin: 14th century ;
Middle English bekene, bikene, bekyn "signal fire, banner," going back to Old English bēacen "sign, portent, outward mark or appearance, standard, banner, monument, audible signal, signal fire," going back to West Germanic *baukna- (whence also Old Frisian bēken, bāken "sign, signal fire," Old Saxon bōkan "sign," Middle Dutch baken,(North Holland) beeken "signal, signal fire," boken "sign," Old High German bouhhan "sign, nod, portent, foreshadowing, banner," Old Norse bákn "sign" [probably borrowed from West Germanic]), of uncertain origin;
* Note : The older speculation on an origin for the Germanic etymon is discussed exhaustively by Anatoly Liberman in An Analytic Dictionary of English Etymology: An Introduction (University of Minnesota Press, 2008), pp. 3-9. Among the conjectures are descent from Indo-European *bheh2- "shine, give light, appear" (see: {fantasy:1|fantasy:1}), *bhou̯gh- "bend" (see: {bow:1|bow:1}), or *bherǵ- "shining" (see: {bright:1|bright:1}), with varying ablaut grades, root enlargements and degrees of phonetic attrition; and borrowing from Latin būcina "horn, trumpet" (used as a signal). Liberman's own hypothesis depends crucially on forms without -(V)n, as early modern Dutch baeck "beacon, lighthouse," claimed to be Middle Dutch by De Vries ("reeds m[iddel]n[eder]l[ands]") and van Wijk ("zeldzame vorm"), and Low German bak, bake. (M. Philippa, et al., Etymologisch Woordenboek van het Nederlands, on line at etymologiebank.nl, have it no earlier than 1559.) Liberman rejects the idea that these later words are simply shortened from the forms with n. Since *bak-/bāk- and *baukn- cannot be reconciled by ablaut rules, he hypothesizes that they are part of a large network of Germanic words built from the consonantal frame b-g/b-k that denote "objects capable of inflating themselves and making noise" (p. xxxiii). The Germanic etymon would hence have originally denoted a floating object (a bladder?) marking a channel, whence it was generalized to denote any kind of signal. The specific form *baukn- was formed by analogy with the semantically close derivative *taikn- "sign" (see: {token:1|token:1}). Though the existence of the group of affective words that Liberman postulates see:ms highly probable, his inclusion of *baukn- in the group is questionable. Most notably, the forms alleged to have original short or long are extant only in the coastal languages, Dutch and Low German, that could have borrowed the word from Frisian, where *-ā- is historically the regular outcome of *-au-. It would see:m preferable to devise a way to delete the (back-formation from a plural?) than to depend on a string of speculative semantic shifts ("inflated object that makes noise when squeezed" > "object that floats" > "float, buoy" > "marker, signal") to account for the words, even if this would continue to deprive us of an etymology. West Germanic *baukna- is not treated in G. Kroonen, Etymological Dictionary of Proto-Germanic (Brill, 2013).;

1: A City in Southern Dutchess County in which is know to be pot-infested drug addict wasteland full of mostly Catholics that unanimously approve of the usage of Marijuana and named their city "Tree City". They send their kids to public schools that are ranked lowest in Dutchess County. Really religious people send their kids to *Private Catholic Schools* Beaconites are known to be racist to many groups of people they don't prefer. Two being Gays (not Lesbians) and Autistics.
Beacon is often stereotyped to be a picture-perfect Hudson Valley suburb of NYC.
The mayor of Beacon as of June 27th 2010 is hated even by Beaconites, in fact, Beaconites don't know what to say about them. He wanted to close down their on the spot and very helpful Fire Department Engine One, while residents easily signed a petition, and he's done other questionable actions to make life harder for Beacon residents.
Beacon has a grudge held towards it by the Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper. One can see this when articles about Beaconites are written like this fake obituary "Joe Smith, who was from Beacon a lifelong Beaconite, has died in his home in Beacon. He was from Beacon, and went to Beacon schools, and regularly attended games in Dutchess County and Beacon. He was a Beacon wrestler for his JV Beacon Bulldogs team in Beacon High School which is located in Beacon, New York."
* e.g., ... *Poughkeepsie resident walks to his car after meeting several Beaconites and having a very rough time at lunch being criticized he's from Poughkeepsie.*
Lifelong Beacon Resident: Where are you from?
Poughkeepsie Resident: Poughkeepsie.
Lifelong Beacon Resident: Lol, dang you guys got lots of problems... wow! I don't like Poughkeepsie.
Poughkeepsie Resident: What's the problem? Every area has good and bad to it--
Lifelong Beacon Resident: Lol, that's *coughs up flem from yesterday night's Friday Night Main Street party and spits while Poughkeepsie resident flinches* ta-- *ahem* that's mad funny, I'm dying *cough*!!! Hahaha, whatever *walks away, socially backs off and coughs a bit more flem up*

1: a decent sized city in Dutchess County in New York given a horrible reputation by people outside of Beacon. It is a historical site, and once was a center of industry in new york, particularly in the hat making business with the Mattewan family.
* e.g., ... non-beaconite-man, ive heard so much crap about Beacon. i dont see why anyone would live there!
beaconite- alot has changed since the 90's. beacon has changed alot and is a very nice place to live

2: Today, it is surrounded by Fishkill and Newburgh, both much less desirable places to live. Most of the activity in the city takes place on Main Street, which runs from the Fishkill creek to Rt. the schools are small, but have a lot to be desired, such as a working security dept. there is quite a marijuana and tobacco smoking problem in the city, particularly of adolescents in the school system. These crackheads in training take one step outside of the schools and smoke right next to the schools property and police on stand by who wont do a damned thing about it.
Beacon has several nice areas, but you have to sift through the rest, like the riverfront and east main, which are horrible areas to be caught in.
all in all, if you can sift through the bullshit, Beacon is a pretty nice albeit underrated area in Dutchess County

1: A small city located in the northern suburbs of NYC. Also called the tree-city, it has many art gallerys and restaurants. Some people say the people in Beacon "hate gays and autistic people, and they only send their kids to Catholic schools..." but this is not true. Beacon is a very nice and welcoming city in which many people visit. Beacon is the almost polar opposite to newburgh which has many gangs and crimes. I love to walk around Main Street and visit the shops. And on the second Saturday of every month, all the gallerys stay open late and put out new items for display.

1: 1) A resteraunt in Spartanburg, SC. The resteraunt is mostly famous for it's (very) sweet beacon iced tea. They also have a lot of greasy food there. Even their salads are greasy. They also have good ice cream there. They are also famous for employee JC Strobel, whose famous catchphrase "CALL IT!" which he yells out when it is someone's turn to order. Instead of ordering a "deluxe" plate, they call it an "a-plenty."
2) A really good resteraunt in Spartanburg, SC. Enough said.
